Queen Elizabeth II pays tribute in Belgium
13 July 2007

The Queen of England joined Queen Paola of Belgium in commemorating the dead from Europe's first Great War at the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Passchendaele with ceremonies in Ypres in Belgium.

After an aerial display from a vintage First World War biplane that showered the Tyne Cot war cemetery with a blanket of red poppy petals, the Queen, accompanied by Prince Philip, listened to commemorations from the great-great grandchildren of those that lost their lives fighting in the war.

The royals were joined by dignitaries from France, Germany, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Ireland and the UK in commemorating the dead.

More than 700,000 people died on both sides in the battle that lasted over 100 days. The names of nearly 55,000 fallen soldiers with no grave are inscribed on the grand Menin Gate, the dramatic arch in Ypres, through which thousands of visitors pass every year.
