UNWTO climate change and tourism summit
18 July 2007
The United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) will hold its second annual conference concerning climate change and tourism in Davos, Switzerland, from 1 to 3 October.
With the general recognition that work needs to be done by all levels of society for the prevention of climate change, the UNWTO is hoping to ensure that the tourism sector plays its part.
The organisation is committed to sustainable development in both the private and public sectors of world tourism. At the first conference in 2003, a proactive agenda was established for the industry's response to the threat of climate change.
UNWTO secretary general Fransesco Frangialli, explained: 'The Davos International Conference and the follow-up ministerial summit in London will trigger research and policy measures that will enable tourism to respond to the challenges of climate change and at the same time reduce the industry's own contributions to global warming.'
Official statistics show that international tourist arrivals from January to April increased by six per cent globally, to 252 million. With worldwide tourism witnessing strong growth, taking steps to fight global warming has become a top priority within the industry.
