Spanish royals head to Majorca
19 July 2007

Even royals need summer holidays and the Spanish monarchy is no different. King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia of Spain arrived at Son San Joan airport in Palma, on the island of Majorca, yesterday as they look to enjoy some time in the sun.

Located in the Mediterranean Sea, Majorca is the largest island in Spain and makes up the Balearic Islands along with Ibiza, Formentera and Minorca. Majorca is a particularly popular holiday destination for tourists from Germany and the UK, as well as a number of high-profile celebrities who frequent the island.

The royal couple headed for the capital of the Balearic Islands just days after attending the baptism ceremony of their granddaughter, Princess Sofia. The little princess, who was born on 29 April, is named after her grandmother and wore the same baptismal lace gown as her King Juan Carlos as she was blessed with water from the River Jordan.

Sofia is third in line to the Bourbon throne behind her father Felipe and her sister Princess Leonor, however any son that Prince Felipe and Princess Letiza may have in the future would automatically move to second-in-line.
