Latin America 'studded with new wonders'
20 July 2007
The Seven New Wonders of the World were announced this month, following a global vote and three of them are situated in Latin America.
Mexico's Chichen Itza, Peru's Machu Picchu and Brazil's Christ Redeemer won the vote, along with the city of Petra in Jordan, the Great Wall of China, the Roman Coliseum and India's Taj Mahal.
Chichen Itza is the most famous Mayan temple city and served as the heart of their ancient civilization. Many parts of it such as the pyramid of Kukulkan, the Temple of Chac Mool and the Hall of the Thousand Pillars, can still be seen today.
The settlement of Machu Picchu was built in the 15th century by the Incans halfway up the Andes Plateau, deep in the Amazon jungle, as a city in the clouds. After the Spanish invaded the Incas, the city was 'lost' for over 300 years until it was rediscovered in 1911 by Hiram Bingham.
The statue of Christ the Redeemer in Brazil is 38 metres tall and stands on top of the Covcovado Mountain overlooking the city of Rio de Janeiro. After five years of construction, it was completed in 1931 and has become a lasting symbol of Brazil across the world.
