Flower festival and fireworks, in Toulouse
20 July 2007

In late August, the Pyrenean town of Bagneres-de-Luchon will be home to an explosion of vivid colours, musical notes and floral scents.

The Flower Festival and Parade, which is held just outside of the city of Toulouse in the south of France, is a celebration of beauty in its many forms. On top of the floral parade, there is dancing, displays of classic cars and a beauty contest.

Founded by French poet and dramatist Edmond Rostand, who is best known for his play Cyrano de Bergerac, the festival begins with an open air concert, followed by the beauty pageant.

There are parades and street performers of various disciplines, then the big procession of floral floats. After the sunset, fireworks light up the sky as music plays from the concert stage below.

Just minutes from Bagneres-de-Luchon, the city of Toulouse is the fifth largest in France and features Europe's largest space centre. It hosts a number of galleries, museums and monuments and is home to the Saint-Sernin basilica, the largest Romanesque church in Western Europe.
