World's highest rollercoaster opens in Swis Alps
23 July 2007
While the Swiss Alps are famed as one of the world's top winter skiing destinations, holiday makers have been given new incentives to visit Switzerland's mountains in the summer, with the opening of the highest rollercoaster in the world.
At 3,000 meters above sea level, the Alpine Coaster is situated on a glacier between Les Biablerets and Gstaad, two ski resorts.
Opened in May 2007, it provides riders who are not too busy screaming and closing their eyes with some breathtaking views of 24 mountains with peaks over 4,000 metres.
Thrill-seekers will be pleased to hear that the Alpine Coaster travels over 40 kilometres per hour through 12 curves, 11 waves, three jumps, two bridges and a 100 metre vertical drop.
A number of new attractions and events are currently being developed for the area to attract more holidaymakers throughout the year, including a ski-race, a mountain marathon and a number of music concerts.
