Spanish Festa de Agua 'making a splash'
23 July 2007
Thousands of people will descend upon the small Spanish town of Villagarcia de Arousa on San Roque's feast day for the town's annual water festival.
After a religious ceremony to the patron saint in the morning, the games begin with the Festa de Agua as revelers, armed with buckets, hoses and hydrants get down to the serious task of soaking each other.
The waterworks date back to the early 1990s, when the Galicean town suffered a long and arduous drought. The town's people begged the local patron saint to bring water, offering up the last drops in the town's possession. At that moment, legend has it that the rains began.
The festival has become famous around the country and now attracts between 20,000 and 30,000 people each year during August.
