Argentina: 'South America's premiere golfing destination'
24 July 2007

With more golf courses than any other country in the continent and a successful showing for Angel Cabrera and Andrew Romero in the 2007 US and British Open Championships, Argentina stakes a claim to being South America's primary golfing destination, according to the country's tourist board.

Of the 270 golf clubs spread throughout the country, 138 are situated in the capital city of Buenos Aires alone. Golf is quickly becoming a national obsession, with more than 100,000 players, and is bringing in tourists attracted to the country's unsurpassed courses and driving ranges.

'We are excited about the increasing [international] interest in golf in Argentina,' said Susan Marples, director of golf at the Argentine Tourist Board. 'The recent success of national sportsmen such as Angel Cabrera and Andrew Romero has helped raise the profile of Argentina as a golf destination.'

Beyond golf, Argentina also offers visitors a fine selection of vineyards, beefs, polo and the tango. Golf is quickly emerging as a new attraction, which can supplement these traditional tourist magnets to make the South American country an even more attractive holiday proposition.
