Harrington's the star in Scotland
24 July 2007

Padraig Harrington emerged victorious from a four-hole playoff against Spain's Sergio Garcia to become the first Irishman to win the British Open in 60 years at Carnoustie, Scotland, this weekend.

The Irish sportsman moved up to number six in the World Golf Rankings after taking home the championship. After ending regulation play tied at seven-under-par, Harrington was able to beat Garcia by one shot in the playoff.

Argentina's Andres Romero took third place, while world number-one Tiger Woods of the United States could only take his hat off to Harrington, after finishing tied in 12th place.

The Carnoustie Golf Links is one of the spiritual homes of golf. It is recorded being played in the town, which is situated in Angus, as early as 1552, more than a quarter of a century earlier than the first record at St Andrews.

Since 1931, Carnoustie has been one of nine historic links that regularly host the British Open Championship, the oldest of the four major championships in men's golf, and the only to be held outside of the US.
