Athina Onassis de Miranda watches the riders in Portugal
25 July 2007

Athina Onassis de Mirandi was in Portugal this week, to cheer on her husband, Brazilian showjumper Alvaro de Miranda Neto, as he competed in an equestrian competition at Lisbon's Manuel Possolo Hippodrome.

The sole survivor of Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis and heiress to his large fortune, Athina is herself a competitive showjumper and has been touring the circuit this year with her husband, whom she married in 2005.

Both husband and wife have recently competed in equestrian tournaments around Europe and have spent a considerable amount of time in Belgium training.

Athina is hoping that her hard work will be rewarded with a place on the Greek national equestrian team ahead of next summer's 2008 Beijing Olympics.
