Chinese supermarkets to stock space food
26 July 2007
Although steeped in thousands of years of tradition and culture, China is also on the forefront of global cutting edge. It is not surprising to hear, therefore, that the supermarkets in the East Asian country will soon be stocking space food.
Visitors will be able to sample a menu of sixty different dishes, including culinary delights such as stewed duck and roast pork. The menu will also feature exotic creations like cantaloupe chips or mooncake, a dessert made of a thin layer of pastry and a sweet lotus-seed paste filling.
Chen Bin, head of China's space training centre, only the third in the world to launch a human into space, explained that space food is not only tasty, but provides astronauts with their required daily intake of 2,400 calories.
'They are especially suitable for outdoor activities, such as polar region expeditions, mountain climbing and travelling,' he was quoted as saying.
The centre has also developed chocolate bars and confectioneries for astronauts preparing for the next manned space flight in 2008, the same year that the country will host the Summer Olympics.
