Top gap year destinations revealed
27 July 2007
India, Peru and Tanzania are the most popular destinations for students taking a gap year, new research has revealed.
The survey by Year Out Group revealed that the most popular gap year destinations are changing with the times. Kenya and Thailand, once inaccessible to visitors, now occupy joint sixth position on the top-ten list.
China has also risen in popularity, moving from ninth to fourth place in the last 12 months. South Africa, Australia, Canada, Ghana, Costa Rica and the UK also proved to be popular choices for gap year travellers.
Richard Oliver, chief executive of the Year Out Group, commented on the findings: 'The number of individuals embarking on volunteering projects, expeditions, structured work placements, courses and cultural exchanges is on the increase.
'People's experiences are hugely beneficial, both to the local communities and to the individuals themselves. A well-organised gap year project also gives participants a welcome boost to their CV and is well-received by employers.'
