Air Berlin invites passengers to 'gem of the North Sea'
30 July 2007

Germany's second largest carrier, Air Berlin, has teamed up with the German National Tourist Office to extend an invitation to travelers looking to explore the country's finest island.

Sylt, the largest of the Northern Frisian Islands in the North Sea, is Germany's largest island and was once part of the mainland, until it was cut off by erosion. There is evidence of human inhabitation on the island as far back as 3,000BC.

Those visiting the island paradise will be welcomed by a fine array of sporting activities and a 'Mini Beach Olympics' in September, which will feature many different sand based competitions, as well as good food and pleasant company.

On the subject of food, the island is famed for its fine restaurants and hospitality. Among its 12 villages are a number of excellent pubs, cafes and restaurants. Sansibar is particularly noteworthy. Nestled among some beautiful sand dunes, the restaurant is a regular haunt for many of Germany's 'rich and beautiful'.
