Stockholm reveals 'wonder of the Vikings'
30 July 2007

Situated just outside of the Swedish capital city of Stockholm, Birka is a United Nations World Heritage Site that once served as a seat of power among the Viking Kings and an important Scandinavian trading centre that is now open to visitors.

Until the end of August, tourists will be able to wonder around the fortified town that has been painstakingly excavated and reconstructed by archaeologists, eager to learn of one of Europe's most important civilisations.

Founded in the middle of eighth century, the site was one of the earliest urban settlements in Scandinavia. It was abandoned by the Vikings 200 years later, and also served as a home to Pagans and Christians at different periods in time.

Those visiting Birka will be able to take guided and dramatised tours, peruse the excellent museum of artefacts that has been established at the site and features miniature models, or explore various ongoing archaeological digs.
