Singapore secures first F1 night race
07 August 2007

Singapore will stage the world's first ever Formula One grand prix race to take place at night, on 28 September 2008.

The Singapore grand prix is the 15th event in next year's 18 race line up, which was released this week. It will consist of a 3.25m street circuit that snakes past many of the island nation's most famous landmarks, including the world's largest observation wheel, which is currently under construction.

Jonathan Hallett, communications director for the Singapore GP, said that a night race would be ideal for Singapore because of the humid tropical climate, which would be a burden on the racers and spectators in the daytime.

He warned though: 'We will carry out a night race only if the FIA and Formula One administration find that the safety of drivers and spectators is not compromised.'

The Spanish city of Valencia will also be included on next year's Formula One world tour. Valencia will host the European Grand Prix on a street circuit on 24 August, subject to approval.
