Festivities at Byblos in Lebanon
08 August 2007

To the north of Beirut, the ancient port of Byblos, a World Heritage site of great importance, will be the venue for an international festival of east and west this September.

Fusing music from Middle Eastern and Western genres with others from all over the world, the Byblos International Festival hosts shows mixing and matching styles within each performance.

In recent years, Arabic singers have been accompanied by Spanish guitarist, and oriental orchestras have performed alongside central European gypsy artists.

Those attending the festival will also be able to visit the Medieval Ottoman souk, a traditional market place that leads to an impressive fortress built by the Crusaders.

The city of Byblos is recorded in ancient Greek sources as the first city ever built and archaeologists today believe it to be the oldest continuously inhabited city.

Situated on the coast of the Mediterranean, it has seen the rise and fall of the ancient Persians, Alexander the Great and the Byzantine Empire in its long life, before Muslim rule was established in the seventh and eighth centuries.
