Lithuania hosts European Culture Workshops
14 August 2007

From 21 to 23 September, the Lithuanian capital city of Vilnius will host a number of European Culture Workshops as it prepares to become the first post-Soviet block city to take the mantle of European Capital of Culture during 2009.

In September the city will afford inhabitants and visitors alike the chance to visit a number of new exhibitions being planned for the year. The exhibition Art in Unconventional Space will also offer people the opportunity to create their own art in surprising places.

The aim of these projects is to bring art to places where it never existed before - be it the city's medieval cellars or bomb shelters and bunkers left over from the Soviet era.

The EU tradition of appointing a cultural capital each year, which started in 1985, has given more than 30 European cities the honour of being heard as they showcase their cultural identity and development to the rest of the world.

This year, the cultural capital of the continent is Sibiu in Romania. In the last two years, the title was awarded to Cork in Ireland and Patras in Greece respectively.
