Mexico celebrates independence
16 August 2007

For two days in September, Mexicans all over the country unite to celebrate their independence from Spain in 1821 with re-enactments of battles, parades, singing dancing and street parties.

Thousands travel to Plaza de la Independencia (known as Zocalo), the spiritual and historic centre of Mexico City to celebrate their forefathers' victory in the Mexican War of Independence.

An important site all year round because of its position in the city, its role in ancient Aztec rituals and protests and revolts throughout the city's long history, the Zocalo is at its most frenetic during the independence celebrations as excited revellers take to the streets.

Beyond the noise of the crowd and the beats of drums, visitors will also be able to hear the famous Grito de Independencia, the Cry of Independence.

The president will also ring a ceremonial bell from the balcony of the Palacio Nacional signalling the crowd to erupt in a rapturous display of cheers as a fireworks display illuminates the sky above. On the second day of festivities, the military parades through the centre of the city.
