Classic cars and a classic setting in France
17 August 2007
On 16 and 17 September, the old streets of Angouleme, a beautiful town situated in south-western France, will be filled with classic sports cars competing in a number of shows and competitions, including a rally and a street race.
The Circuit of the Ramparts, as it is known, derives its name from the all-day races that took place around the remnants of the town's medieval fortified wall in the first half of the twentieth century. Today, festivities are as much a celebration of the town as they are of the cars.
Drivers of the vintage vehicles will navigate the same circuit that was first used in 1939, a course that includes two right-angled turns and a hairpin bend. There will also be a large parade of classic cars and 20 of the most carefully restored will be chosen by a jury to be displayed in a special showcase.
As the motorists drive around the town in the all day rally, spectators and onlookers will notice that they also wear period motoring costumes, replete with aviation sunglasses, billowing white scarves and leather driving gloves.
From Angouleme's ramparts and the boulevards that have been built along them, visitors can obtain fantastic views of the Charente countryside in every direction.
