Hundreds pose nude on Swiss glacier
20 August 2007

Nearly 600 naked protestors from all over Europe came together to form a 'living sculpture' on Switzerland's Aletsch glacier this week, in order to raise awareness about climate change.

Photos were taken by New York artist Spencer Tunick, who is famed for his pictures depicting naked crowds in public settings around the world such as London, Amsterdam and Mexico City.

Environmental group Greenpeace, which organised the event, explained that the aim was to 'establish a symbolic relationship between the vulnerability of the melting glacier and the human body'.

'The melting of the glaciers is an indisputable sign of global climate change,' it said, estimating that the Swiss glaciers will completely disappear by 2080, unless more is done to counteract global warming.

Switzerland has about 1,800 glaciers, almost all of which are currently losing ground. The Aletsch occupies a valley on the southern side of the Jungfrau Mountain in the Upper Rhone Valley. It has retreated 115m in the last two years alone.
