Driving to the continent increasingly popular
23 August 2007
Holidaymakers are increasingly choosing to hit the road when heading on holiday, rather than using other transport options.
Research carried out by Zurich revealed that more than nine million people from the UK plan to drive themselves on holiday this year.
For 52% travelling on four wheels is the most convenient, while almost a third find it is more cost effective.
Some 14% consider the car to be a greener mode of transport and 16% can't face airport delays.
But anyone jumping behind the wheel this summer is advised to ensure they have sufficient insurance cover.
'While it might not be top of the 'to do' list before a holiday we urge motorists to give their insurer a quick call before they go as this will help speed up any potential claims,' said Roy Seeds from Zurich.
'Drivers should check their policy to make sure they're insured on international roads, how long they're covered for and if they need to extend their policy for extras such as breakdown assistance abroad.'
A separate study from esure predicted that of the almost 14 million people from Britain planning a bank holiday getaway, four million drivers will get stuck in a traffic jam for at least 90 minutes.
