Brits 'are not taking their holidays'
24 August 2007
People from the UK are not taking all the holiday they are entitled to and this is leaving them stressed and unproductive, new research suggests.
Data gathered by YouGov on behalf of Holiday Inn shows that 1.8m workers in the UK said they only took half of their allocated annual leave.
A further 241,966 revealed that they had been unable to take any time off for a holiday in the last year.
Worryingly, 14% of all Brits reported that they had now gone over seven months without any holiday.
Even those people who did manage to escape the office for a vacation only did so for a short amount of time. Around 12m workers said that they took a week or less off when they last took a holiday. Just 3.2m managed to get away for a fortnight.
Alexi Hakim, chief operating officer for UK & Ireland at the InterContinental Hotels Group, commented: 'The findings come as we face the final bank holiday of the year and reveal a workforce at risk of burn out.
'As a nation we need to face the fact all work and no play leaves us stressed out, exhausted and unproductive. Workers need to take more regular breaks and pace themselves to avoid the impact of "Holi'rexia".'
