'Romantic cities' offering affordable breaks
24 August 2007
Germany's 'romantic cities' are offering affordable city breaks this autumn in an effort to attract more visitors to the country.
Both Ryanair and Lufthansa fly to Frankfurt Hain airport and from there services run to the south-western cities of Trier, Koblenz, Mainz, Worms, Speyer and Kaiserslautern - a must for all couples.
Kaiserslautern will feature the 'Lautrer Kerwe' in October, which is a large fair offering wine and fairground treats. Koblenz will play host to 'Schangelmarkt' from the 14 to 16 September, which is the town's biggest carnival.
Wine lovers will enjoy the market in Mainz at the end of August, which brings wine lovers, wine merchants and wine makers together to enjoy the region's reds and whites. Budding historians, meanwhile, can revel in the Moselle valley - home of the Constantine the Great exhibition until 4 November in Trier.
The affordable city breaks take place between 30 August and 30 October and the German National Tourist Office is hoping to boost visitor numbers throughout this period.
