Green-minded holidaymakers 'choose camping'
29 August 2007

Camping holidays have become increasingly popular this year, with many green-conscious holidaymakers around Europe seeing them as the most ethical holiday option, according to Discover Leisure.

In a survey of holidaymakers, the organisation found that campers and caravanners also aim to help local economies, with 47% planning to only buy local produce while on holiday and 48% aiming to do so whenever possible.

Furthermore, three-quarters of respondents claimed that they recycle when staying on campsites, while 83% of caravanners said they would consider using solar panels for energy.

According to Yell.com, there has been a 13% rise in the number of people choosing to go camping in the UK this year, with those from London, Sheffield, Manchester and Birmingham most likely to take a trip to reconnect with nature.

'We have seen a big rise in interest over the past 12 months – the pressures of modern living seem to be giving people a thirst for the great outdoors,' said the Camping and Caravanning Club.
