Ethical hiking tours launched in Egypt
29 August 2007
With the spotlight currently resting on climate change and the impact of the tourist industry on the environment, Bedouin Paths, an ethical tourism company, has launched a new range of hiking tours in Sinai, Egypt.
Promising to support sustainable development and the local community, Bedouin Paths will donate a portion of its profits to fund English classes for Bedouin children and develop the Wadi huts located in the surrounding mountains.
From the beginning of October 2007, conscientious tourists with a sense of adventur will be able to hike the mountains and deserts around the biblical Mount Sinai, where Moses is said to have received the Ten Commandments from God.
Mark Knutton, founder of the company, said: "The hikers will sleep on mountain floors, ride sweaty camels, feel the strain in their legs and have their clothes full of campfire smoke and then wonder why they sit in an office the rest of the time!"
Mount Sinai stands 2,285 metres tall, actually making it one of the smaller peaks in the Sinai peninsula. The adjacent mount St Catherine is the largest, and the Monastery of St Catherine, a Unesco World Heritage Site of immense beauty and one of the oldest Christian monasteries in the world, is situated at its base.
