Kiera Knightley on show in Venice
30 August 2007
Pirates of the Caribbean star Kiera Knightly was among the notables attending this year's International Venice Film Festival, in support of her new film Atonement.
The 22-year-old actress staged a press conference before taking to the red carpet in an exquisite silver Chanel dress for the world premiere of the film, which film critics are saying, could earn her an Oscar nomination.
The actress, who has shot to Hollywood stardom since her breakout roll in the 2002 comedy Bend It Like Bechkam, said that she wanted to be in the film a tragic tale of misunderstood love against the backdrop of the Second World War because she 'loves a bit of romance'.
Atonement will be competing for the prestigious Golden Lion prize for best film at the event which, dating back to 1932, is the oldest film festival in the world, and considered by many as second only to Cannes.
This year, the festival will also pay homage to Spaghetti Westerns, with a special programme curated by cult film director Quentin Tarantino. The winners of the festival will be announced on 8 September.
