New £1.3bn terminal opened in New York
03 September 2007
A new £1.3 billion terminal has been opened at New York's John F Kennedy airport by American Airlines.
The state-of-the-art facility covers over 1.58m square feet and includes 84 ticketing stations, an in-line security baggage system and 44 self-service check-in machines capable of handling both domestic and international passengers.
At the unveiling of the new hub, American Airlines chairman Gerard Arpey said: 'From our speedier security and customs processing to the New York City-themed art on the walls, our new terminal is producing a more convenient, welcoming and enjoyable travel experience for visitors and New Yorkers alike.'
New York congressman Gregory Meeks added: 'The completion of this terminal represents more than just concrete, bricks and steel. It symbolizes the strength of character of the people at American Airlines who have sacrificed much under extraordinary circumstances for this project.'
Tourism is an important industry for the state of New York, with 43.8m people visiting New York City in 2006, supporting more than 368,000 jobs.
Between 2000 and 2006, overseas travel to the city increased by 9%, from 5.7m to 6.2m visitors.
