Lure of Everest captures 25,000 travellers
03 September 2007

Some 25,000 adventurous travellers made the journey to see Mount Everest in the first half of this year, according to reports.

The world's tallest peak, which is known as Mount Qomolangma in the local tongue, has become a favourite destination with adventurous tourists and mountaineers.

Authorities in the autonomous region of Tibet, south-west China, said that visitors generated 3.17m yuan (£208,000) in revenue, the Mathaba News Agency reports.

The regional government of Tibet reportedly has plans to improve infrastructure to accommodate further tourist activity, with proposals in place to adapt a 110km rough road into a blacktop highway leading to Everest's base camp area.

Mount Everest is 8,844 metres tall and, as of the end of the 2006 climbing season, has been scaled by over 2,000 people.

It is part of the Himalaya range of mountains, which stretches across six countries: Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Afghanistan and China.
