Spain plays host to Goya-inspired fair
03 September 2007

This month will see the Goyesque Fair, or the Feria Goyesca de Pedro Romero, take place in Spain and flocks of travellers head to the country to take in the distinctive atmosphere.

The event is stylistically inspired by Francisco Goya, the 18th and 19th century Spanish painter and engraver well known for his dark and surreal works of art depicting fantastic and otherworldly scenes.

Participants dress up in the traditional costume of the bullring – black trousers, short grey jackets and broad-rimmed hats.

A costume parade with horse-drawn carriages takes place through the town of Ronda, 72 miles west of Malaga, and comes to an end in the town's historic bullring.

The climactic bullfight then takes place, with even the matador dressed in attire inspired by the work of Goya.

Bullfighting has attracted a lot of controversy but its supporters in countries such as Spain argue that it is a culturally significant tradition.
