New York visitors prepare to get spooky
06 September 2007

People preparing to visit New York next month may want to equip themselves with some spooky costumes before they leave so they can take part in the city's Halloween celebrations.

A parade will take place through New York's Greenwich Village on 31 October, starting at 19:00 local time.

Everyone brave enough to don a suitably scary costume is invited to take part in the parade and join hundreds of puppets, 53 bands playing different types of music, dancers and artists.

People interested in taking part should gather on 6th Avenue south of Spring Street and north of Canal between 18:30 and 20:30.

Now in its 33rd year, New York's Village Halloween Parade is regularly attended by over two million people, making it the nation's largest public Halloween celebration.

It began on 31 October 1973 when a Greenwich Village mask maker and puppeteer took his children and their friends on a walk from house to house through the neighbourhood.
