Malaysia expecting tourism boost
07 September 2007
Malaysia is expected to welcome 21.5m tourists in 2008, compared to 17.5m in 2006, according to a new government report.
A publication by the ministry of finance detailed the substantial growth that Malaysian tourism experienced in the latter parts of the 20th century and predicted further development in coming years, Forbes magazine reports.
'Tourist arrivals have increased almost 15-fold from 1.2m in 1974 to 17.5m people, with a contribution of 38.2m ringgit [£5.4m] in 2006,' the report said.
Some of the most significant contributions from the travel industry have come since the 1990s, in the form of foreign exchange earnings and job creation, the government said.
By the end of this decade, Malaysia is predicted to welcome 24.6m tourists every year, generating revenue of 59.4m ringgits (£8.4m) and creating an extra 520,700 jobs.
The country is well-served from the UK, with carriers such as Emirates, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Gulf Air and Singapore Airlines all offering services there from London.
