Art lovers will be drawn to Belgium this winter
07 September 2007
Art enthusiasts could find themselves considering Belgium as they look for a winter holiday destination this year owing to a massive exhibition of the work of Peter Paul Rubens being held in the country.
The Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium owns a collection of more than 50 of Rubens' works and will have them on display between 14 September and 27 January.
Among the creations owned by the museum are oil sketches, small-scale paintings and "monumental" altar pieces.
The exhibition will evoke Rubens' most productive period, between 1614 and 1640, when he worked from a studio on Antwerp's Wapper Street and is thought to have completed some of his best work.
In addition to the works of art themselves, the exhibition will also reveal the results of a research project that studied the museum's collection over four years.
The show will be held in the Museum of Ancient Art on Brussels' Rue de la Regence.
