Xmas 'as busy as August for holidays'
10 September 2007
The Christmas period is as popular as the month of August for British holidaymakers, a travel industry spokesperson has claimed.
According to the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta), the opportunity to take some time away from work is one of the factors that makes the festive season so popular for holidays.
'Christmas is one of the busiest travel periods. Along with August, Christmas is the biggest time people choose to go on holiday,' an Abta spokesperson said.
'Partly because of the time they get off, and partly because it's just one of those times where things aren't happening in the office.'
As is the case at many other times of the year, the most popular destination for winter travel is Spain, according to Abta.
'Particularly the Canary Islands, because you can guarantee that it's going to be warm around that time,' the spokesperson explained.
Among the other popular locations for a festive holiday are ski destinations such as France, Austria and Italy.
