Prepare to meet Big Tex
11 September 2007

Visitors to the southern states of America next month may get the opportunity to meet Big Tex – the 52-foot cowboy who greets visitors to the Texas State Fair.

The fair, which takes place between 28 September and 21 October in Fair Park, Dallas, is North America's largest annual exposition and dates back to 1886.

Over the years Fair Park has hosted the Texas Centennial Exposition in 1936, which ran for six months and attracted six million visitors, and a concert by Elvis Presley in the 1950s.

Today one of the main highlights of the event is the Texas-Oklahoma football game, which has been played at the fair since 1929. This year the game is scheduled for 6 October.

Other attractions this year will include an attempt by Bryan Berg to break the record for the world's tallest house of cards and a night-time parade featuring illuminated floats and giant puppets.

The fair regularly attracts around 3.5m visitors, generating around $350m (£172.7m) in revenue for the city of Dallas every year.
