Peru prepares to celebrate miracles
11 September 2007

Lima, the capital city of Peru, is preparing itself for the month of October and the spectacular celebrations that come with it.

Jesus Christ, or Senor de los Milagros (Lord of Miracles), is Lima's patron saint and every year the city's residents organise an extravagant tribute to him.

The highlight of the festival is the parade through the streets of the capital, when a giant image of Christ is carried aloft and masses of people gather to sing and dance to celebrate their devotion to their saint.

A select group of carriers are given the task of holding the enormous representation of Christ on their shoulders.

People selling all sorts of souvenirs, sweets and trinkets line the streets, along with thousands of other Peruvians and visitors.

The monthly festival is a hugely significant one for the country and has spread from the capital city to some other regions.
