Singapore kicks off 6 months of festivals
13 September 2007

The island of Singapore is readying itself for six months of festivals, with the first already underway.

A galaxy of lights will illuminate the country right up until February, with Chinese lanterns, fairy lights and elaborate multicoloured displays on show.

One of the main events is Deepavali, or the Festival of Lights, which runs from 12 October until 18 November, when Little India comes to life with street carnivals and many homes light oil lamps to celebrate light and good fortune.

Between 12 November and early January Singapore hosts Christmas in the Tropics, with a number of feasts, concerts and countdown parties to mark the festive season.

Visitors hoping to get a comprehensive experience of the island can take part in a walking tour if they travel before 12 November.

The tours are free and move through Singapore's ethnic enclaves of Chinatown, Kampong Glam and Little India to coincide with the festivals.
