Iris recognition 'best airport security option'
17 September 2007
Iris recognition systems are the most reliable form of airport security, a technology company spokesperson has claimed.
A representative from Aditech Ltd said that eye-scanning is the quickest and most efficient way of establishing passengers' identities as they pass through security.
Describing the technology, the spokesperson said: 'It is able to identify an individual within a couple of seconds from a database of millions.'
He added: 'You don't have to touch anything. All you have to do is look at, what is effectively, a camera and it takes an image of your iris.'
Security systems also have the potential to scan fingerprints and faces and the Aditech spokesperson claims that a mixture of these systems will begin to appear in more airports as the technology matures.
A trial of biometric scanning was carried out at Heathrow airport in December 2006 when passengers flying from terminal three were invited to scan the print from their right index finger before boarding their flight.
