Australia sees more short-term stays in August
18 September 2007
It appears that Australia is enjoying as much popularity as ever with tourists from around the world, with a monthly increase in the number of short-term visitors in August.
The country's bureau of statistics has revealed that Australia welcomed 478,500 people on short holidays in the month, a 4% rise on the number in July.
Some 1.4% more short-term tourists came to Australia from north-west Europe in August, the figures reveal, while north-east Asia (3.7%) and Africa (3.8%) also saw increases.
It was south-east Asia where the lure of the island nation appeared to be strongest, however, with a 10.2% gain in the number of short-term visitors heading down under.
Increasing numbers of New Zealanders appear prepared to make the trip across the Tasman Sea to visit their neighbour country, with a total of 95,800 short-term visitor arrivals in August, more than any other country.
