Transatlantic flights 'to get cheaper in 2008'
19 September 2007

Flights between Britain and America will get cheaper in 2008 following the introduction of the Open Skies treaty, it has been claimed.

The policy, due to be introduced in March next year, will mean that any airlines can make the flight from the UK to the US.

With the carriers that are currently permitted to fly to America from the UK reportedly making big profits from the routes, other airlines are expected to show a big interest in the sector.

James Fremantle, a spokesperson for the Air Transport Users Council, said: 'You can take it for granted that airlines are doing pretty well on their American routes.

'And next year it's all being liberalised so any airline can now fly from the UK to the US, so you'll find there will be more airlines offering services to America. That should increase the options available to passengers and should bring fares down as well.'

In anticipation of the introduction of the Open Skies policy, BA has announced that it will be offering more services between London Heathrow and the US next year.
