Workers back Stansted expansion
19 September 2007
Stansted airport employees have spoken out in support of planned expansion at the hub, claiming that it will secure their jobs and make more work available.
Unite union members staged a demonstration at a public inquiry into whether the cap on passenger numbers at the airport should be raised.
The workers responded to MP Sir Alan Hazlehurst's recommendation that Stansted be prevented from expanding by saying that growth would offer a valuable boost to the economy and the employment market.
One Stansted employee told the BBC: 'It should expand because it's protecting my job at present and it's going to create employment in the future for many people in the area.
'It is going to generate money and prosperity for all local businesses and it will give us the prospect to negotiate better terms and working conditions at the airport.'
There is currently a limit of 25m passengers a year at Stansted but airport operator BAA has lodged an inquiry to have this increased to 35m.
