See London's lights switched on
20 September 2007

The switching-on of the Christmas lights along London's Regent Street has become such a popular event that visitors will be booking their flights and hotels in advance to ensure they don't miss a moment.

Shopping season is officially declared open when the lights are illuminated on November 20th so visitors will be descending on the English capital from far and wide to enjoy some retail indulgence as well as the ceremony itself.

So important is this occasion that Regent Street is entirely closed to traffic from 4pm.

London's town crier gets the proceedings underway before a well-known personality has the big job of switching the lights on.

Last year the responsibility was handed to actors Sir Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis and Shane Richie. Previous celebrities to carry out the task include Will Young, Billie Piper and former prime minister John Major.

After the ceremony has taken place visitors can shop to their hearts' content in the hundreds of stores and boutiques around London's West End.
