Belfast rail link 'crucial'
21 September 2007
A Northern Ireland MP has said that a rail link connecting Belfast International airport with the city is "crucial" if further growth is to be made possible at the hub.
William McCrea, Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) MP for South Antrim, welcomed discussions on the creation of a rail link at Belfast airport.
He said that an upgrade of infrastructure around the hub would support promotion of travel to and from Northern Ireland and also offer a boost to employment.
'The International airport could be expanded, bringing new transatlantic routes and thousands of new jobs, but a rail link and an upgrade of the roads network would be a crucial factor,' Mr McCrea said.
'Development plans for the International are economically exciting for the local community as they would be a real boost to Northern Ireland Plc.'
The MP described Belfast International as a "thriving airport in the United Kingdom" and referred to the recent decision by Aer Lingus to use it as their newest hub as evidence of its success.
