Frankfurt terminals go non-smoking
24 September 2007

The operator of Frankfurt airport has announced that the hub's passenger terminals will soon be smoke-free.

Frankfurt will conform to the State of Hesse non-smoking law from 1 October, airport operator Fraport said.

Smoking will be prohibited in the airport terminals but areas with ashtrays will be provided for passengers wishing to smoke at the entrances and exits to the terminals.

Transit areas will also be smoke-free, although Fraport claimed that it will be trialling smoking cubicles over the coming months to offer an 'additional service' to passengers who smoke.

Fraport currently has plans to develop Frankfurt airport to meet growing demand, including expansion of the runway system and passenger facilities and development of technical systems.

The airport claims that air passenger volume is expected to increase by around 80 per cent before 2015 in Germany alone.
