Dublin airport 'will need further expansion'
24 September 2007
A new report has claimed that a third terminal will be needed at Dublin airport by 2012, despite the fact that the second passenger facility at the hub will not open until 2010.
According to research commissioned by businessman Ulick McEvaddy, up to 32m people could be using the airport by 2012.
Such a flow of traffic would make a third terminal necessary to avoid severe congestion problems, the Irish Independent reports.
Last week the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) announced that 2.4m people used the airport during August, 9% more than 12 months earlier.
Despite this growth, talk of a third terminal is premature, according to the DAA.
'It's all a question of timing,' a spokesperson told the Independent. 'There's no dispute that Dublin Airport will need a third terminal.'
The representative added: 'If passenger traffic were to grow by our higher forecasts, we expect to need a third terminal by 2014-2015. Lower forecasts would see it needed by 2018.'
