East Midlands hails leisure passenger numbers
25 September 2007
East Midlands Airport (EMA) has reacted positively to a recently-released report from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) which shows that the airport has the highest proportion of leisure passengers in the country.
In total some 4.7m passengers passed through EMA last year, with 87.6% of that number citing leisure as their main reason for travel.
That outstripped the figures from other major routes such as Stansted and Gatwick, a fact that was welcomed by EMA managing director Penny Coates.
'The figures released by the CAA show that we have worked extremely hard to offer our customers a wide portfolio of destinations from their local airport,' said Ms Coates.
She added: 'In 2007, we have had month-on-month passenger growth - the August bank holiday alone was one of the highest year-on-year increases in the country.'
In 2006 some 2% of all UK passengers travelled through EMA, and the airport is expected to enjoy another busy season this winter with the introduction of new routes including Goa, Copenhagen, Oslo and Stockholm.
