Local airports 'help combat climate change'
25 September 2007
The presence of alternatives to major hubs such as Heathrow airport contributes to efforts to cut emissions by reducing the need for long car journeys, a trade association has claimed.
Commenting on the recent expansion at regional hubs such as Bristol airport, a spokesperson for the Airport Operators Association (AOA) said that the growth has had a beneficial effect on business in certain regions.
Increased accessibility to local airports will also help keep emissions down by offering people shorter journeys to catch flights, according to Chris Goater, head of media and public affairs for the AOA.
Commenting on efforts to lower carbon emissions, Mr Goater said: 'The presence of a local airport helps. It means people don't have to drive long distances, to Heathrow or Manchester like they may have done in the past.'
Speaking about the methods that can be used to combat climate change, he added: 'We have to deal with them together, looking at new technology; new ways of operating aircrafts all these things are going to help reduce the carbon emissions for the whole business of flying.'
While regional airports are regularly used by families and people going on holidays, Mr Goater said that they are increasingly being used by businessmen who want cheaper flights.
