US airlines awarded China routes
27 September 2007

Two US carriers have announced that they have been awarded new routes to China by the US department of transportation (DOT).

United Airlines and US Airways will begin their new services in spring 2008 and 2009 respectively.

Once the United service gets underway the carrier will be the first American airline to offer daily, non-stop services between San Francisco and Guangzhou.

Glenn Tilton, president and CEO of the company, said: 'United Airlines is honoured to be selected as the first US carrier to provide non-stop service between San Francisco and Guangzhou.'

US Airways will operate a daily service from Philadelphia to Beijing using wide-bodied Airbus A340 aircraft.

Chairman Doug Parker thanked the DOT and said that the airline was "extremely honoured" to have been awarded the route.

Some 19m customers are currently served ever year by US Airways at its Philadelphia hub, with flights going to 111 destinations across the globe.
