BAA hubs to get new X-ray machines
28 September 2007

All seven of BAA's air hubs will be equipped with new X-ray machines next year, the first time in a decade that airport X-ray technology has been changed.

The new Advanced Threat Identification X-ray devices, developed by Smiths Detection, have the capacity to automatically detect explosives and liquids.

Another new addition will be an automatic tray return system that speeds up the movement of non-threatening bags through security and diverts suspicious packages down a separate channel.

The changes are expected to improve security at airports and also reduce queues.

Ian Hutcheson, BAA director of security, said: 'This strategic partnership with Smiths Detection is a groundbreaking agreement which will lead to enhanced security standards at all BAA airports.'

Stephen Phipson of Smiths Detection said that BAA has 'taken a lead in passenger processing' and predicted that other airports will soon follow suit.
