Skies opened between UK, Singapore
04 October 2007

A landmark agreement has been signed that will give airlines from Singapore and the UK complete access to the other country's aviation market.

All constraints on air travel between the two nations will be lifted, including flights to onward destinations in other countries.

Arrangements on other issues including codesharing, fair competition and ground handling will also benefit from fewer restrictions.

The deal, which will come into effect on 30 March 2008, is particularly significant as it is the first to award complete access to the London-US aviation market to non-EU or US airlines.

Aviation minister Jim Fitzpatrick said that this deal will be good for both the aviation industry and for passengers.

He added: 'It is the most liberal agreement of its type and I hope it will set the standard for other comparable agreements in the future.

'This is a major step towards extending the benefits of open aviation agreements that travellers already enjoy within Europe.'
