Local group tidies up Bodrum beaches
04 October 2007

A Bodrum-based environmental group has launched a campaign to keep the town's beaches and waterways as clean as possible.

The foundation, known as DenizTemiz Turmepa, also intends to consolidate public opinion on problems of pollution through its 'international coast and sea clean-up' campaign, the Turkish Daily News reports.

A number of local groups and organisations got involved, with40 members of the local sailing club and ten divers from the Bodrum Underwater Association offering to help.

Some 200 students from elementary schools also volunteered to take part in the campaign, alongside mayor of the town Mazlum Agan and Bodrum Mariners Foundation president Mustafa Erdogan.

Filiz Tan, Bodrum Turmepa coordinator, said: 'This year we have organised this activity for the fourth time.

'With the coast clean-up campaign we aim to make the region a more desirable place preventing pollution.'

Bodrum is located in south-west Turkey, on the ruins of the ancient city of Halicarnassus.
